Shepley Yarns is a family-owned business based in Saddleworth, in the heart of the Pennines. Our family name is derived from Old English, meaning ‘the shepherd’s valley’. We pride ourselves on our ability to combine two hundred years of age-old techniques and experience in the wool industry with our passion for sustainable, renewable fibres.

This wool fibre was developed after sheep from North Africa were introduced into southern Spain in the 13th century. The Spanish then cross-bred them with stronger English sheep to create what we now know as Merino wool. It was not until the 17th century that this sheep breed was introduced to the new worlds of South America, South Africa, and Australia, where they proliferate today.

Merino wool is a luxurious yarn that is sought after by many of the top fashion designers. Its fine fibres make it extremely soft to the touch whilst retaining its durability. Merino wool is also renowned for being breathable, antibacterial and easy to maintain.

​

Over recent years, Shepley Yarns has partnered with the Pascual family of the Sierra Mariola region of Spain to create this fine yarn using the best quality Merino fibres. Our Merino wool is sourced from regions of the world where the process of mulesing is not carried out.

​

We are selective in our supplier base and choose to work only with companies that have a sound ecological footprint. When our partners dye our wool, they are fully compliant with REACH-Ordinance (EC) No. 1907/2006 and are accredited to OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 norm.
